Walks and Pictures

We’ve been a couple for more than 30 years and for much of this time have spent walking and hiking at weekends and during holidays. It’s a great way to relax and spend time together and explore the countryside, both in the UK and further afield.

As we continue to walk new routes, we wanted to create a space for us to look back at the places we’ve been. This is where the idea for this website came from. A living archive of our walks and pictures. We hope you enjoy it too.

What’s the deal with the Eiffel Tower?

stone henge, dutch windmill, tower of pisa, london eye and eiffel tower icons used for scale, shown not to scale

Keen eyed viewers may have noticed these icons that appear alongside the elevation graphs on each walk. There are intended to give a quick visual indication of scale and to grade the walks by how hilly they are. For reference these are are the true heights of the landmarks used, which are always shown to-scale on the site:

  • Stonehenge - 4 metres
  • A traditional Dutch Windmill - 25 metres
  • The Leaning Tower of Pisa - 56 metres
  • The London Eye - 135 metres
  • The Eiffel Tower - 330 metres

Disclaimer

The routes shown on this site are GPX representations of the exact path that we walked on the day in question. They often include diversions or detours, perhaps to explore a local attraction, visit a pub or avoid a field of lively cattle. They are often based on routes from guidebooks or websites, but don't always follow them precisely. For this reason please consider these route maps as a guide only.

The time shown against each walk is the total time we spent out on the walk, followed (in brackets) by our actual walking time.

Undertake these routes at your own risk.

Technical information

This site is built in Wagtail, an open source CMS that is based on Python and the Django Web Framework. Interactive maps are provided by Mapbox. GPX parsing is via the gpxpy library. Web development by Chris Guy @ Comms and Code.

The majority of the images are shot on a FUJI X100 digital camera, but there are also some analogue pictures on here, taken on Pentax or Yashica 35mm compacts or my Nikon FE-2 SLR camera. If you like the photography, there is more to see on my photo blog: chrisguy.photo.
